CESSRST Graduate Scholar Recognized for Outstanding Diversity Paper at ASEE Environmental Division Conference
CESSRST II fellow Isabel Lopez has been honored for her exceptional contributions to the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Environmental Division conference. Lopez’s paper, titled “How Active Rainwater Harvesting may help Reduce Nuisance Flooding: Flood Analysis and Social Barriers to Adoption,” has earned the 2023 Best Diversity Paper for the EED division. Furthermore, Lopez’s work was also nominated for the ASEE Best Diversity Equity and Inclusion Paper, highlighting her dedication to inclusivity within the realm of engineering.

Lopez’s paper delves into the intricacies of active rainwater harvesting and its potential in mitigating nuisance flooding. What sets this research apart is its focus on the social aspects—how communities perceive and interact with such sustainable technologies. The study involved a comprehensive survey distributed in a community in El Paso, Texas. Given the community’s predominantly Hispanic population with a strong Spanish-speaking presence (81%), the survey was thoughtfully crafted in both English and Spanish, ensuring inclusivity.
